What
happens on my first visit to Dr. Appel's office?

You're
going to like your first visit to Dr. Appel's office,
because you will get to meet Dr. Appel and see what
a great guy he is! Dr. Appel will examine your teeth
and discuss your orthodontic problem. He will tell you
how we put your braces on (PAINLESSLY!); how long he
thinks you will wear braces and show you the different
types of braces we use. You should bring any dental
insurance forms to your first visit, because when Dr.
Appel is through answering your questions, his office
manager will come in to discuss the cost of braces and
work out an interest-free payment plan that will be
easy on your pocketbook.

When
should someone begin orthodontic treatment?

Braces
can be worn at any age! (Dr. Appel once made a retainer
for a guy who was 80 years old!) The American Association
of Orthodontists (of which, Dr. A. is a member) suggests
that children be looked at as early as age 7 to detect
and intercept developing tooth problems. Most kids start
wearing braces between age 11 and 13, which coincides
with the time that most baby teeth are lost, and most
permanent teeth are fully grown in place.

How
long do most people wear braces?

Usually
braces are worn for 18 to 30 months...about 2 years,
on average. Less severe cases may take just a few months.
An adult's teeth sometimes move slower, because their
jawbones are a bit thicker and denser than teenagers.

How
often do you visit Dr. Appel once your braces are placed?

Because
Dr. Appel uses the latest wires, made from super- elastic
metal alloys, visits are no longer needed every 2 to
4 weeks, as in the past. Patients are usually seen about
6 to 8 weeks apart, and visits take anywhere from 15
minutes to an hour, depending on what needs to be done.

Are
braces painful?

Placing
braces on your teeth is done easily and painlessly,
however, about 8 hours after braces are first placed,
many patients experience discomfort that lasts about
2 days. This can be relieved by taking aspirin or Tylenol,
and eating softer foods so you don't have to chew very
hard.

Are
there certain foods I shouldn't eat while wearing braces?

Sweets
and soda should be avoided, because they contain sugar,
which can cause cavities. Hard, sticky foods should
also be avoided because biting into them can break your
braces, making your treatment take longer.

Do
I have to see my regular dentist while I wear braces?

YES!
This is very important! You should continue to see your
regular dentist for cleanings and checkups, every 6
months. Dr. Appel does not perform these services...he's
just a bracing guy!
